About Aljezur

The best spots in Aljezur

Algarvemap

Time spent in Aljezur is an opportunity to rediscover peace and tranquility, interrupted only by the singing of birds or the sound of the sea. The boundaries of the municipality of Aljezur broadly form a rectangle made by sea and hills, and its landscapes reflect this dual influence. While the coast is marked by high cliffs, beneath which huddle sandy coves and pristine dunes, the hinterland is a place of rolling hills covered with vegetation that recede, row upon row, as far as the eye can see. Between the two, extends a broad strip of fertile fields and valleys where the traditional crops of vegetables, sweet potatoes and peanuts are still grown. Aljezur offers great conditions for surfing, hiking, biking, fishing and plenty more. You might also enjoy the beautiful coastline on horseback. All this is waiting to provide you with a subject for tall tales told at nightfall, among friends, over a glass or two of local wine.

Aljezur Beaches

The perfectly formed waves that break off Aljezur’s beaches are among the best in Europe and make the ideal surf spots.

Families with small children can enjoy guarded beaches, Amoreira being one of the special ones around, with a long river delta and natural swimming pools which are formed. The water is regularly tested and found to be good in terms of the CEE Regulations.

Other activities: Tours by bicycle, by foot, horse and boat, Kayak tours, tennis, yoga and much more.

The nature park of Aljezur

Costa Vicentina

The Costa Vicentina Natural Park offers visitors unforgettable impressions that you can explore on the hiking trails of the Rota Vicentina, like the Fisherman’s Trail or circular routes, as well as various bicycle routes.

The craggy outline of lofty cliffs that plunge into the foaming seas.

Long beaches stretch to the inner land in wide landscapes of dunes or tiny sandy coves like shells tucked away between looming rocks.

A landscape vibrant with natural beauty and so little touched by passing centuries that it seems barely to have registered humans’ presence at all.

The Natural Park extends from Odeceixe to Burgau, a broad sweep that takes in approximately 80 km of coastline.

It offers an opportunity to appreciate the hundreds of plants in their natural habitat. In an atmosphere full of sun and silence, it is a true  paradise for botanist and fancier of plants!

The fauna is also very rich. In addition to foxes, wild boars, badgers, wild cats and rabbits, birds are the big attraction of the Costa Vicentina.

In the creeks and wetland areas inhabit lots  of species such as herons, storks, kingfishers and water hens. The crags of the coast are home to raven, rock doves, pigeons, gulls, magpies and many other seabirds.

Birds of prey, such as eagles, falcons, sparrowhawks and owls, share the sky with more than thirty other bird species, such as blackbirds and nightingales, whose singing is to be heard throughout the region.
